  • International conference Reinforced Retaining Walls – Basics of Design, Use and Future Development, Prague 2010

A  congress of leading domestic and international experts in the geotechnical discipline as part of the second international conference Reinforced Retaining Wall Systems, Prague 2012, took place at the Congress Centre of CTU Masaryk College in Prague on Wednesday, 29 February 2012.

The conference was organised by the Czech Technical University, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Geotechnics, together with our company KB-BLOK systém, s.r.o. and Naue, GmbH, the German manufacturer of geosynthetics. After a brief opening word by the Vice Rector of the Czech Technical University, Doc. Ing. Josef Jettmar, CSc., the participants were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Prof. Ing. Alena Kohoutková, CSc., who opened the congress agenda with an opening speech.

The congress was truly international, attended by representatives of design, execution, investment and commercial companies and other experts and scientists from the Czech Republic, Slovakia,  Germany, Austria, Poland, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary and Moldova.

The meeting agenda primarily focused on practical experience of design and construction and supervision over construction of reinforced retaining walls. Participants demonstrated  principles of action of reinforced retaining wall structures pursuant to EC 7, various methods of construction technology and structural capacities of reinforced retaining walls. The opening invited speeches included  Prof. Dov Leshchinsky of the University of Delaware, USA, and Prof. Ing. Ivan Vaníček, DrSc., of the  CTU in Prague. Both principal speakers gave a highly detailed and comprehensive explanation of principles of action and methods of design and numerical analysis of reinforced retaining wall structures.

Among other things, the conference featured the first public demonstration of the certified construction systems for reinforced retaining walls Geostone Wall System, a structure consisting of concrete blocks made by our company KB-BLOK systém, s.r.o. and Secugrid geosynthetics.

The 2nd international “Reinforced Retaining Wall Systems – Practical Experience and Case Studies” conference was successfully accredited in the ČKAIT lifelong education system with 1 point.

The professional public showed extraordinary interest in the conference. Looking back, the participants evaluated the event as very successful, with an interesting topic and beneficial for future practice. We would like to repeat the conference periodically, as is traditional.
